What is productivity?

Updated: May 29, 2022

Alright, first article, of mine, let's keep it straight to the point. Youtubers explaining their path to becoming "productivity gurus" and people at your school who seem to get everything done, get good grades and have some heck of a time to play games.

But how?

Let's define productivity. Google says," the effectiveness of productive effort, especially in industry, as measured in terms of the rate of output per unit of input,". Put simply, More done in less time. I don't wish to talk about the rules and habits, or discuss time management tricks and all. You guys can find that in many good YouTube videos and articles. I'm here to offer you a student's opinion on how to view productivity and some insights on adopting it.

Let's have a look at this picture, showing a man getting many things done at once. This is a very, very misleading idea of productivity. Multitasking is usually ineffective for most people to be productive (albeit some), as it requires a constant shifting of attention across multiple subjects. A rather ideal solution would be to

FOCUS.

An important aspect to productivity is being focused on one goal, each at a time. Give your fullest attention to it in finishing the work. Though I am a bit of a hypocrite as I'm writing this article while watching a movie...just joking (or am I?).

After usually 15 minutes of starting on any activities, example homework assignments, you can feel yourself getting absorbed in it if you are not too distracted, known as the flow state. What we want to learn from focus is that in a fixed period of time, a higher working intensity allows us to get more work done. Who wouldn't want that? I strongly believe focus is a key component to being productive, but definitely not the only one.

I mainly discussed the importance of focus in leading productive lives, and here are a few others that are vital as well. Good time management, effective future planning systems, consistent maintenance of mental and physical wellbeing, prioritization, networking with people relevant in your areas of interest, motivation and dedication in planting continuous effort. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of the last point. Every day, give at least one hour to work intensively towards the thing you want to achieve in life, every day. Consistency, the adding up of small actions each day to accumulate into one giant net profit return. Relish the work you plant in those actions, effort is key too.

I will discuss all these remaining points very soon in upcoming articles, and I hope you subscribe if you're new to the website. If you don't, still cool, just offer me ways to improve my quality of writing. I hope you learnt something meaningful to your school life from this. Yeah school didn't teach you this.
